Differences and Applications of Double-Wall Corrugated Pipes and Wound Pipes

A Brief Analysis of the Characteristics of HDPE Steel-Reinforced Wound Pipes:

1. Lightweight, easy to handle, excellent sealing performance, and low construction costs

Due to their high stiffness-to-weight ratio, HDPE steel-reinforced wound pipes are lighter than any type of pure plastic pipe with an equivalent ring stiffness.

2. Safe and reliable ring stiffness

With a modulus of elasticity ratio between steel and plastic exceeding 200 and a weight ratio greater than 7.85, steel-strip reinforcement—compared to pure plastic pipes—allows these pipes (especially large-diameter ones) to achieve reliable ring stiffness and a superior stiffness-to-weight ratio.

3. Strong resistance to abnormal, sudden loads

Thanks to high ring stiffness and good axial flexibility, the pipe can dissipate stress through elastic deformation when subjected to sudden loads or disasters—such as uneven soil settlement, groundwater uplift, excessive localized surface loads, or earthquakes. This prevents leakage or damage at the joints caused by excessive stress or deformation.

4. Corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and long service life

The corrosion resistance of polyethylene (PE) pipes allows them to transport corrosive fluids (such as acids and alkalis) and enables installation in corrosive environments like marshes or wetlands (refer to ISO/TR 10358 for chemical resistance specifications). The service life of HDPE pipes is more than four times that of steel pipes. PE pipes can be joined via heat-fusion welding, ensuring joint strength and preventing leakage.

The service life of HDPE pipes can reach up to fifty years.

5. Flexibility, leak-proof performance, and impact resistance

The excellent flexibility of PE pipes allows for easy installation along the contours of the trench, simple avoidance of obstacles during laying, and adaptability to soil settlement in marshy or soft-soil areas. These connection methods—electrofusion and butt fusion—ensure leak-proof joints with excellent sealing and environmental performance. Both methods allow for simple manual operation without the need for heavy machinery, making the process highly convenient and reliable. Additionally, polyethylene (PE) piping offers high impact resistance, preventing cracking or damage during installation and transportation.
